Beyond Ait Benhaddou: Hidden Kasbahs of the Ounila Valley

Most travelers reach Ait Benhaddou, take their photos of the famous red-mud kasbah, and turn back toward Marrakech or Ouarzazate. Few realize they’ve only seen one end of something much bigger — the Ounila Valley kasbahs, a 40-kilometer stretch of crumbling fortresses that most tour buses never touch.

Where Are the Ounila Valley Kasbahs?

The Ounila Valley runs roughly 40 km between the Kasbah of Telouet and Ait Benhaddou, in the southern High Atlas. Before the modern N9 highway was built in the 1930s, this valley was the main route linking Marrakech to the trans-Saharan trade caravans — meaning every kasbah along it was built by someone who controlled, and taxed, that trade.

The Story Behind the Ruins

The valley’s history centers on one family: the Glaoui, known as the “Lords of the Atlas.” As the last powerful tribal rulers of this region, they grew enormously wealthy by taxing caravans passing through on their way to and from the Sahara. Their power collapsed after Moroccan independence in 1956, and the kasbahs they left behind have been slowly returning to the earth ever since.

Telouet Kasbah — The Forgotten Palace

At the valley’s far end sits Telouet, the Glaoui family’s actual residence — not just a fort, but a palace. From outside it looks like a hollowed-out ruin, but step through the maze of rooms and you’ll find surviving fragments of real luxury: painted cedar ceilings, intricate carved plaster, and bright zellij tilework framing the windows. Telouet sits at roughly 1,800 meters altitude, so expect cool temperatures even in summer.

Worth knowing: Telouet was damaged in the September 2023 earthquake. Restoration work is ongoing, and which rooms are open can change — check current access before planning around it.

Kasbah Tamdaght — A Ruin Frozen in Time

Closer to Ait Benhaddou sits Kasbah Tamdaght, another former Glaoui property that’s seen almost no restoration. Where Ait Benhaddou has been polished for film crews and tourists, Tamdaght is the real, unfiltered version — quiet, crumbling, and nearly always empty of visitors.

The Villages In Between

Between the two kasbahs, the P1506 road winds alongside the Oued Ounila river through small Berber villages that barely register on most maps. Expect green terraced fields against red rock canyon walls, and if you visit in spring, almond blossoms lining the valley floor.

How to Visit the Ounila Valley Kasbahs

Most travelers driving from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou take the main N9 highway — faster, but you’ll miss the valley entirely. Taking the P1506 instead adds time but reveals the whole route. A full day is the realistic minimum to properly see Telouet, the villages, and Ait Benhaddou without rushing. Our Ait Ben Haddou day trip from Marrakech can be extended to cover this full route.

Best Time to Visit

Spring brings almond blossoms and comfortable temperatures throughout the valley. Winter can be genuinely cold at Telouet’s altitude, occasionally with snow — pack accordingly if visiting between December and February.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Telouet Kasbah still open after the 2023 earthquake?

Partially. Some interior rooms remain closed for safety work, though the site itself is accessible with a guide. Access continues to change as restoration progresses.

Can I visit the Ounila Valley without a guide?

Yes by car, but a knowledgeable driver-guide adds real value here — the history isn’t signposted, and a guide can get you into Telouet’s best rooms and explain what you’re looking at.

How is this different from just visiting Ait Benhaddou?

Ait Benhaddou alone is a 1-2 hour stop most tours squeeze into a bigger day. The Ounila Valley kasbahs turn that into a genuine half-day or full-day experience with far fewer other tourists.
