How shared tours from Marrakech work

A shared tour is the simplest and most affordable way to see southern Morocco from Marrakech. Instead of booking a whole vehicle, you book a seat and travel with a small group of other travellers in an air-conditioned minibus with a professional driver. The routes, stops and desert camps are the same ones we use on our private tours. The difference is that the day follows a fixed timetable, and the cost of the vehicle and driver is shared by everyone on board.

We pick you up in the morning from the closest point to your riad or hotel that a car can reach. In the medina this is usually a nearby square or gate, a short walk from your door. At the end of the trip we bring you back to Marrakech. Shared tours suit solo travellers, couples and friends watching their budget, and anyone who enjoys meeting other people on the road.

Choose a shared tour if…

  • You travel alone or as a couple and want the best price
  • You are happy with a set departure time and route
  • You like meeting other travellers along the way
  • You want an easy, organised trip with nothing to plan

Choose a private tour if…

  • You want to leave when you like and stop where you like
  • You are travelling as a family or a group of friends
  • You want a different route or extra nights
  • You prefer your own vehicle and driver

Shared tours FAQ

Which shared tour should I choose?

If you only have an afternoon, the Agafay sunset and dinner is the easy option. For a full day out, the Ourika Valley is the place for mountains and Berber villages, Essaouira for the Atlantic coast, Ouzoud for waterfalls, and Aït Benhaddou for kasbahs. To sleep in the Sahara, choose the 2-day Zagora tour or the 3-day Merzouga tour.

Zagora or Merzouga: what is the difference?

Zagora is closer to Marrakech, so the 2-day trip has less time on the road, but the dunes there are small. Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, the tall golden dunes most people picture when they think of the Sahara. It is a longer drive, so the trip takes 3 days, and you see the Dadès and Todra gorges on the way.

When is the best time for a shared desert tour?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days and mild nights. Summer days in the desert are very hot. In winter the days are often sunny, but nights in the desert and the High Atlas are cold, so bring warm layers.

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes, sunglasses, sun cream and a hat, a warm layer for the evenings, and some cash for lunches, drinks and tips. On the desert tours, a small bag for the night at camp is more practical than a large suitcase.
